We Are Pinball #12 "Hangin' with Cale!"
We Are Pinball
1 hr 24 min
Summary
Operator Cale Hernandez argues Jersey Jack needs simpler, cheaper games for location play; Stern dominates due to flipper feel and game theory.
Cale Hernandez, operator of Electric Bat Arcade (two Arizona locations with ~77 total machines), discusses arcade operations, game economics, and design philosophy with the We Are Pinball podcast. The conversation centers on operator profitability (Pro vs. Premium vs. LE machines generate similar earnings), Jersey Jack Pinball business model focused on home collectors rather than location operators, rule complexity as a barrier to casual play, and the mechanical/gameplay differences between Jersey Jack and Stern machines. Cale emphasizes that flipper feel, game theory, and accessibility drive Stern's street success, while Jersey Jack's complexity and feature saturation create "fatigue" for casual players.
