SEGA’s super rare hologram games turn 35 this year. In 1991, SEGA released Time Traveler, billed as the “World’s First Holographic Video Game.” It was created by Rick Dyer of Dragon’s Lair fame. There was no regular screen: a hidden CRT and a curved mirror projected live-action laserdisc footage onto a small stage, so five-inch-tall characters seemed to stand right in front of you. Players guided Marshal Gram across seven time periods, from 1873 to 2552, using Dragon’s Lair-style timed inputs and a glowing “Time Reversal Cube” to rewind mistakes. In 1992, Sega reused the cabinet for Holosseum, a one-on-one fighting game sold as a conversion kit. It dropped the unreliable laserdisc player for Sega’s System 32 board and pitted four fighters against each other on a black, background-free stage. Those are the only two games ever made for Sega’s hologram cabinet. As seen on the floor at the Galloping Ghost Arcade In Brookfield, Illinois. Have you you ever played one?
