Ken Crone and Greg Bone discuss pinball myths debunked by community feedback, including misconceptions about pinball manufacturing difficulty, the Harry Potter licensing deal, female participation in pinball, and game design tradeoffs like multiball count and shots vs. mechanics. The episode draws from 130+ Facebook comments to explore community beliefs that contradict industry reality.
Highlights
- Making pinball machines is incredibly difficult, contrary to the myth that it's easy.
- Harry Potter license was widely believed to be unavailable due to J.K. Rowling's disapproval of pinball machines in bars and pool halls.
- There was a myth that Harry Potter pinball would not have coin doors and would only be for home use.
- Women's participation in pinball is substantively higher than community memes suggest, with competitive female players and women-only tournaments.
- On modern Spooky pinball machines, jumpstarting the power supply does not fully boot the computer without additional BIOS settings changes.
- The majority of pinball players prefer 3-ball multiball over 5+ ball multiball due to controllability and playability.
- Good shot layouts can compensate for a lack of mechanical features in modern pinball games.
In this episode of Flip N Out Pinball Podcast, hosts Ken Cromwell and Greg Bone take on some of the most commonly repeated pinball myths...the "facts" that get passed around so often they start to feel true. Pulling from listener feedback, the conversation covers misconceptions around nudging, maintenance, playfield care, mods, play count, and machine value, while offering real-world perspective on what actually matters. The episode also explores the evolving pinball landscape and why the hobby is ultimately about enjoyment, not necessarily investment.
