Final Round Pinball Podcast Episode 65: Eligible Hosts: Martin Robbins & Jeff Teolis Another Round of pinball chat, including: -Holiday Recap Direct feed:...

Highlights

  • Fathom (Haggis) should be eligible for multiple Twippies categories due to significant changes (new LCD screens, new rule set, new call-outs) but was excluded from main categories as a 'remake'
  • Cactus Canyon Remake by Chicago Gaming is nominated for Best Animations and Display but not Best Sound or Best Rules, creating inconsistent application of remake eligibility rules
  • Godzilla is designed as the most accessible game Stern has ever made, with constant player reward feedback regardless of performance
  • Keith Irwin designed Godzilla's rules; Rick Nagel did the code
  • Godzilla's gameplay can extend to hour-long sessions for skilled players
  • Final Round has received more direct messages in a week since Marty criticized Godzilla than any other prior period
  • James Bond 007 LE is priced at $19,999 before tax
  • Final Round was not nominated for Twippies last year but is nominated this year

Notable quotes

It is a masterclass in player feedback... I don't think Stern has ever had a game where they have choreographed the fuck out of a game where the timing of everything is so precise that you are just getting a high constantly, little micro moments through the game.
Marty (Final Round co-host)
Remakes are eligible for categories in which significant changes have been made. Do you think there's been significant changes made? Yes. 100%... Displays on the apron, a whole new set of code. You've got the different GI, callouts, everything sounds. It's night and day different game.
Jeff and Marty (discussing Fathom eligibility)
It's bullshit. There's no other way to put it. It's bullshit. You can't say it's allowed for this machine, which are remakes and new rules, but not this one, which has different sounds, different call-outs.
Jeff (Final Round co-host)
What means things? Our game sales and enjoyment and things like that... The emails the back and forth the fun we have with you... I'm about to go to indisc and I'm about to see hundreds and hundreds of people and i guarantee several will come up to me and talk about love what you're doing on final round... that's the stuff that means stuff to me
Marty (Final Round co-host)
What a waste of Keith Irwin's talent. Jack Danger's home pin looks better than this. Heck, I'd buy Primus.
Jeff (Final Round co-host)
I would never own it. I don't think there's enough light and shade for me. I think it's just on all the time... they've nailed the feedback so whoever did the code on that game... the way that you are feeding back to the player moments and the feeling of success you've absolutely nailed it
Marty (discussing Godzilla)
The biggest skill for an artist, to me, is not the actual art itself. It's the placement and using that play field as a canvas and utilizing the space to a T.
Jeff (Final Round co-host)
